被犬神附身的陈家少主陈奇和他的家臣夜神，趁机来到看守禁地，准备偷取侍魂瓶。 犬神借司徒然对他的信任偷取其手印，而后利用忍符和司徒然的手印终于让侍魂瓶现身。 另一边司徒然从千姬夫人的歌曲中醒过神来，发现犬神附身的陈奇不见了，赶忙出来寻找，惊觉自己对陈奇情愫更浓。 蚀月之夜，犬神设法将侍魂瓶调换，被司徒然识破。司徒然用结界困住犬神，同时怨魔设法让司徒然用驱魔箭射伤犬神。犬神以为司徒然和怨魔相互串通，两人之间误会越来越深。大战结束，犬神为了不拖累陈奇，思来想去最终让司徒然将它收服到侍魂瓶内。最后司徒然带着侍魂瓶，和陈奇夜神结伴去了金陵……。山田日後承認在開拍此片之前，已心諳渥美清的肺病步入末期，決定此章為最後一章，並安排由淺丘瑠璃子演的莉莉送寅次郎踏上人生的最後一程。分別15年後，兩人於如詩如畫的奄美大島重逢，感情依舊，鬥氣繼續，沒完沒了似的。正如山田所想，雖然系列必須完結，但始終不想為寅次郎的故事／人生劃上句號。結局如常開放，代表寅一直繼續他的旅程，日本人依然有夢。 公映後翌年，渥美清病逝，享年68歲，本片亦成為他的遺作。 Yamada knew before production began that Atsumi's health has deteriorated to such an extent that Tora-san to the Rescue would be the last film in the series.
