The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。1898年山东大旱，无数难民涌入上海求生，人流中马永贞（金城武 饰）、马大祥（元华 饰）兄弟俩亦来到这片英国人掌控下的东方乐园，二马无技傍身，只好从码头苦力做起。马永贞机缘巧合结识上海码头之王谭四（元彪 饰），并凭借出色身手获得其欣赏。其时谭四与巡捕房支持的杨双连番血战，马永贞遭遇混战，为谭四的一壶春舞厅出手击退强敌，对卖场其中的歌女金铃子（宣萱 饰）一见钟情。谭四感佩马永贞义气，将一壶春和老板娘艳阳天一同赠送之。马永贞遂以一壶春为起点，率众攻占杨双地盘，激起上海滩无数杀伐。马永贞遭遇杨双暗算，命悬一线之际却再遇金铃子……。一个上海姑娘顾晓霖来到鄱阳湖小岛，她说来拜访一位女知青，在这里教了一辈子书的刘老师。实际上她是来凭吊大学时的恋人潘岳，也就是刘老师的儿子，当年因为毕业时潘岳要回到这里，他们才分手的。 自从唯一的儿子死后，刘老师就一病不起，已经好久没来学校上课了。县里曾派过几个老师来这里，但都因条件太苦而先后离去。村长骗她留下来等刘老师，顺便代课，好应付县教委检查农村教育工作的事。她的留下使学校终于开课了。在代课的这段时间里，她隐隐地感悟到了潘岳为何放弃都市，放弃爱情的选择，感悟到了他母亲刘老师为何在这里三十多年教书的选择，也理解了孩子们渴望老师，渴望知识的愿望，最终，她选择了成为一名乡村女教师。。
